Book Review: First Lie Wins

“Evie” has hustled since she was a teen. She’s made sure to care for herself and her mother by any means necessary…and those means are typically less than legal. When her low stakes cons catch the eye of Mr. Smith, a Wizard of Oz-type employer who sets up the jobs without revealing himself, Evie enters the underworld of fake identities and hitmen. Her latest job feels different though. She actually likes her mark, Ryan, and senses she’s getting the runaround from Mr. Smith. When someone shows up at party with her name – her real name – she knows something is amiss. Mr. Smith is paying extra attention to her every move and if she disappoints him, the repurcussions could be the end of her.

There was just something about this book. It is the best, most classic thriller I’ve read in years – epitomized the genre. It was a true page turner with twists that felt organic. It avoided the major tropes and maintained a perspective that puts the reader in the center of the action, maneuvering around Mr. Smith right alongside Evie.

5 out of 5 stars.
